Original poetry

I wrote a poem yesterday. I'd like to humbly submit it for your reading pleasure.

Coloring Inside The Lines
by Rebecca Walters (© 2013)

It is therapeutic
coloring between the lines.
Hands steady as the pencil dashes up
and down.
Steady currents of vertical motion
inside the lines
Like waves of the ocean
as they leave and return to land.

But coloring outside the lines,
those horizontal,
frightening, jagged lines
that are uncontrolled
and unpredictable,
scare me
like the push and pull
Tug of War on the playgrounds of youth.

Those games that I lost,
those experiments,
the moments of lost control,
these are the lessons learned,
the hearts broken,
the paths cleared
where we are forever changed
for better or worse,
when we color outside the lines.
