I had an epiphany today: Music helps us become (or stay) present.

As someone who deals with anxiety (I'm constantly worrying about the future-- both big and small things) and wistful thoughts of the past, it is difficult for me to simply be present. But today, I realized while singing along to a song, that music helps us get enveloped in the moment, surrendering to the beat and lyrics. Sure there are times when you are anticipating an exciting, climatic moment in a song, but when you are singing along, following note-by-note, you are present. Perhaps that is yet another reason why music is so powerful.
