Songs About Hair

I've never written a letter to a major corporation, but today I made an exception. In my quest for curly hair perfection, one of my absolute favorite products changed its ingredients and I can no longer use it under my current methods. So, I am including my letter to Garnier here, just because I think it just might give you a chuckle. Yes, I am that serious about my hair. I have lived with curly hair my entire life, and to find that my miracle product is no longer the same, well, that my friends is a game changer.

Dearest Garnier,

I hope you will take time to read this letter as it voices the opinion of not a single individual, but rather an entire group with a specific hair type who have been marginalized. Growing up with curly hair, I have lived my entire life trying to tame “the beast”. Thankfully, I recently (with hoards of research) discovered (*heavens open*) THE CURLY GIRL METHOD. Now, as I mentioned earlier, I speak not only for myself, but for hundreds, nay thousands, of women who have found success in treating their unique hair differently. To put it briefly: The products used in our hair must not contain sulfates or silicones. So, when I began my quest for curly perfection, I turned to reasonably priced easy-to-locate products in my local grocery/drugstores that fell under this criteria. And I found you, Garnier. Garnier Triple Nutrition conditioner, to be exact (*Heavens open again*). You made my hair come to life. You made it shine, you defined it—you completed it. It was as though my hair had found a soul mate in you. I had never gotten more compliments on my hair in my entire life then I did when I began the Curly Girl method using your product.

But now this has changed. YOU have changed and I am desperately wanting you to come back the way you were. You now have a silicone (*All curlies GASP in fear*). We are not ALLOWED to put such filth in our hair if we want healthy, luxurious shine and definition! So, since you reformulated your Garnier Triple Nutrition Conditioner, I have, unfortunately, not bought any of your products. I can’t. It’s as though I will be going backwards in my 27 year quest for curl perfection, and I’ve come too far to do such a thoughtless act.

So please, Garnier, I beg of you to go back to your old formula for your Garnier Triple Nutrition conditioner. Take out the bad stuff (silicone, I’m looking at you), and stay true to your natural, healthy roots (pun intended). Remember: As I stated earlier, this is not just me speaking to you, I am speaking on behalf of an entire sisterhood who have felt misunderstood by the hair industry. Please see: www.naturallycurly.com and you will hear our cries for desperation and curl perfection in the message boards.

Thank you and may healthy hair be with you always,

Rebecca Walters
